Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT)

Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT) also known as orthokeratology (“Ortho-K” for short) is a non-surgical option that uses specially designed contact lenses to correct vision while you sleep, eliminating the need for daytime use of contacts or glasses. CRT lenses are worn at night, and reshape the curvature of the cornea during sleep so you can see clearly during the day without glasses or contacts! Think of it as overnight braces for your eyes! Although nearsightedness has a clear genetic link, the progression of nearsightedness is also driven by environmental factors such as reading, studying, computer use, hand held devices and the lack of outdoor time. When we are born, our eyes are not fully developed. As we develop, our eyes continue to grow using the environment and visual cues as a guide. Myopia (nearsightedness) develops when the eyes do not get the proper signal to stop growing. Did you know that Myopia has increased by 66% in the United States since 1971? Myopia is now considered an epidemic worldwide and has become a major health concern for children. The World Health Organization (WHO) projects 2.5 billion nearsighted people by the year 2020. In China, approximately 80% of elementary students in major cities and 90% of college students are nearsighted. Several studies have shown that treatment with CRT (Ortho-k) lenses reduces the progression of nearsightedness significantly and in some cases stops it completely!
